After play-testing a Contempo mouthpiece for alto saxophone in silver finish, outfitted with a matching silver “Olegature” ligature, I truly can say that Oleg has achieved that goal. Getting started with the Contempo, I decided to go with the reeds that I normally use for alto: Vandoren Java Red Box, #2½ and #3. Right away, I felt relaxed and confident playing this setup on my vintage Selmer Mark VI alto. The Contempo showed its prowess with impressive strength when I was pushing the volume, and it screamed out altissimo-register notes not only easily, but in dramatic fashion. When seeking quieter, more subdued sounds, I reduced my airflow a bit, which brought out warm, responsive tones throughout all registers of the horn. Articulation was excellent, and the mouthpiece centered pitches well while allowing for expressive jazz inflections like bends and scoops when desired. The provided “Olegature” ligature paired so well with the mouthpiece on all reeds—including a synthetic alto reed I put on later—that I saw no reason to try other ligatures. Having completed the get-acquainted portion of my testing, I put the Contempo mouthpiece and Olegature in my alto case and headed to a big band gig to see how well they would fare in a live performance setting—one where I would play lead alto all night and take plenty of solos. My confidence in the setup was confirmed multiple times throughout the course of the gig. Tone quality and intonation were impressive. I could blend nicely in unisons and tastefully support the softer ensemble passages. Power was immediately available when called upon during fortissimo sections and saxophone soli passages. The Contempo projected wonderfully during solo spots—so well, in fact, that I felt completely comfortable blowing extended improvisations and playing lead-alto features without a microphone. The Contempo alto saxophone mouthpiece is available in three tip openings: 6, 7 and 8. Both the mouthpiece and Olegature come in a choice of silver or gold finish. (The choice of finish does not affect the acoustic properties of the mouthpieces, according to Oleg). They are available for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. Please note that blue painter’s tape (like the one being used for these instructions) is typically .94 inches wide, not 1-inch wide. It’s ok to use tape like this, as long as you notify us your tape’s dimensions. You may have this problem if the tape was not positioned perpendicular to the reed table (see step 2). This is critical to getting an accurate measurement. IMPORTANT: You MUST use standard US letter paper in order for us to get precise results. This is the size of paper you can commonly find in home or office printers. This is how we correct for image skewing problems that scanners or cameras may have. Do NOT cut, fold, or wrinkle the paper. Note: If you live in a country that does not use US letter paper, you are welcome to use a different size. He is also a 1993 Graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where he earned a degree in Music Education and Performance. He also received a master’s degree from Cleveland State University in 1998. Finally, he was very fortunate in the Spring of 2007 to be inducted into the Edinboro University “Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame”. His performing attributes and clinical workshops include the following artists: Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette, David Sanborn, Christopher Holliday, Phil Woods, Allen Vizzutti, Denis DiBlasio, Ray Brown, Eric Marienthal, Jeff Kashiwa, Dominic Spera, John Fedchock, and Dave Samuels. In 1997, he released his debut record entitled Miles Above All, which was played on several college radio stations along with local Cleveland Jazz Networks. In the summer of 2003, Mr. Palermo was invited to the “Essentially Ellington” Jazz Academy in New York, sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center under the Direction of Wynton Marsalis. It was there that he got to perform and study under Temple University Jazz Director Terrell Stafford and Julliard School of Music Professor Loren Schoenberg. In 2006, his second solo release, *Don’t Look Back,* earned him strong accreditation from Jazz Review.com and made him a household name. The hit track Dreaming was on the top of the charts in Europe and Asia for over 12 weeks and really had an impact on the sales of this album. If that isn’t enough, his first publication, “*Warm-Ups, Scales, Patterns, and Licks*” has been published through Really Good Music Publications. Mr. Palermo is currently a Band Director for the Mayfield City School District in Mayfield, Ohio. He was a member of the International Association for Jazz Education. Mr. Palermo is currently involved with several school districts promoting and evaluating Jazz Education and makes several guest appearances each year. He travels across the United States doing performances, master classes, clinics, etc. The following companies, Conn-Selmer Instruments, Oleg Ligatures and Beechler Mouthpieces, endorse him. In February 2010, the release of “Passions and Dreams” took airways by storm and the hit release “Lovin’ You” became a smooth jazz favorite across the USA and Asia. When I moved from a standard ligature to the Olegature, there was an immediate and noticeable resonance and brilliance shift in my sound, as well as the ability to subtly color my sound based on how the ligature is adjusted on the mouthpiece. When I tried Oleg’s tenor neck on my factory silver Selmer Mark VI, the entire horn was transformed.
